Cooking with the Kids

The kitchen can be a challenging place for children, especially if they have not been very involved with cooking before. Parents can also feel a little uneasy about supervision and what is safe to pass on in terms of skills. The Cooking School believes that all children should have the chance to get practical cooking experience; an ethos that is echoed through from the Focus on Food campaign, which is supported by all the profits from The Cooking School.

During this summer, a range of courses have been run at The Cooking School at Dean Clough from age 9 upwards. These courses are designed to improve kitchen confidence, understanding of food sources and seasonality and really get children excited about cooking. Our kitchen team do much of the preparation for the courses, but explain in detail the importance of food safety, hygiene and cooking at home.

Claudia is a young chef who has attended all our summer courses for 2011 so far. We asked Claudia why she loved The Cooking School and getting hands on with our teachers

Budding Chef Claudia in action

“I like the teachers and having my own work place. My favourite course was the Pasta Party as there was more tasting involved and different ingredients to use. Also learning to make pasta is good as I had not made it before. It helped my cutting skills, which will help me in many ways. The teens course was good. The CousCous I can now make in different ways. I would have liked to have made the wraps for the Mexican dish as well. The pizza course was fun but easy, but that is good as it’s easy to do at home and I have made a pizza most weeks.  I also got some of my own basil to grow and started to use shallots instead of onions.”

The next teen and kids courses will be in October 2011. if you are interested in booking your children in, then click here to find out more and qualify for a discounted second child place.

Looking forward to cooking school this week, making lots of lovely soup and bread. This is good as I can make it for my tea in the winter.
I have been busy showing my friends how to make pizza and other yummy treats I learn’t at the other classes.

Mum likes my fish suprise , which is pizza sauce on top of cod yum yum served with rice and roast veg.

    Happy cooking Claudia
